Brain Mapping with Functional MRI
Dr. Timothy Cloughesy explains the basics of Functional MRI, and its importance in neuro-surgery.

The Functional MRI is typically used in planning for surgery.  The idea is there is a number of neurological functions that are located in different areas of the brain. The neuro-surgical team is particularly interested in the functions that allows for patient independence, such as motor, sensory and language functions.

Dr. Timothy Cloughesy explains the basics of Functional MRI, and its importance in neuro-surgery.

By performing a fMRI study we are able to specifically identify before surgery where these critical areas of the brain are located, and make sure to stay away from these regions during surgery.

Many times the neuro-surgical team is able to fuse Functional MRI with existing MRI scans taken just prior to surgery to help them navigate through surgery and help them determine what tumor tissue can be safely removed and what tissue can not be safely taken.
